FBFF - Friend Friday: Summer Trends

It's the return of FBFF (for me anyway)! I've been too busy to keep up with the Friday fun, but I'm back in it this week!

Today's question is about summer trends.

FBFF - Friend Friday: Summer Trends

What are the top 5 Summer trends that you are looking forward to wearing this season?

Clog sandals
This is a trend that hasn't really taken off in Ottawa (from what I can see), but I absolutely *love* my $24 pair I picked up at Target over the Victoria Day weekend, and will be wearing them constantly this summer!

Printed sun dresses
While in Cardiff in May, I discovered the hot mess that is Primark. Using every inch of patience in me, I maneuvered my way through the craziness, and came out 3 printed dresses richer, and only 15 pounds poorer! Stay tuned for these pretties this summer...

Dry shampoo
This is yet another trend that seemed to take time to get to Canada. Last summer the blogosphere was raving about unwashed hair. It wasn't until this past spring did I finally find a dry shampoo in my local drugstore, but it was terrible and made my hair disgusting (fyi - it was TreSemme). In London I snagged the Batiste Diva Dry Shampoo (which I've since found at home) and I love it! I save so much time in the morning, and my hair feels like it has so much more volume!

Orange nails
One of the first things I noticed in the giant March issue of Vogue this year was the orange nails. I love the vibrant, non-traditional colour, and I love how they make my toes and hands look a wee bit more tanned :)

Hats
I own 2 hats - one floppy one for the beach and a Reebok ball cap for running. But I'm loving the cute little hats everyone seems to be sporting recently - from hipsters to fashionistas. I haven't found the right hat 'for me' - and I'm not sure I will - but in the meantime, I'm enjoying seeing them everywhere.

FBFF - Friend Friday: Gratitude

I know, I know...I've been somewhat of a stranger lately...I've been unbelievably busy with life that I haven't had the time nor energy to post outfit photos. The boy moved home last week which is lovely, but we're still settling into a routine, so I'm a bit off-kilter with my days and haven't had a chance to take photos, etc.  But thanks for sticking with me! I'll get the hang of it eventually, I promise!

Today's FBFF is another great topic - gratitude (it's also the one-year anniversary of FBFF! Yay!). There are so many people in my life I'm grateful for, so am super pleased to have an excuse to give them a shout out (not that I NEED an excuse!).

When it comes to me personally - I owe a lot of who I am to:
My parents. Hands down, they are the most important people in my life and I am eternally grateful for everything they have done for me and my brother. Don't get me wrong, they can make me mighty frustrated and I don't always see eye-to-eye with them on my life choices (or theirs!) but when I think about everything they've done for us and the sacrifices and hard work they put into raising our family, it makes me tear up just thinking about how lucky I am. My parents started with very little, but were always able to give my brother and I more than we ever needed in life...and while it wasn't always as much as others around us were given (we went to high school in a pretty well off neighbourhood and definitely didn't have as much as most), they worked so hard to give us a better and more fortunate life than they had. And in doing this, I think they taught my brother and I strong values of hard work, being good people and respect for others...all qualities I try so hard to carry with me as I become a "grown up" myself.

Of course I also owe a lot of who I am to my bf, D. We have had our (sometimes un)fair share of difficulties in the 4 years we've been together (mostly due to the last 2 years being long-distance) but he has been an amazing support and best friend to me and I love him more than anything. He has always accepted me for who I am and has always encouraged me to be myself, no matter what.

When it comes to me professionally - I owe a lot of who I am to:

Keeping with the fam theme, I'd have to say first and foremost my mother. She started working when I started primary school and showed me that it is possible to raise a family and be a strong, professional, successful woman at the same time. She literally started from the bottom - as a typist - and has worked her way to a respectable policy job that she is proud of. And I've always looked up to her for it. But I also owe a lot of who I am professionally to the amazing people I work with. There are a few very difficult people in my workplace to deal with, but there are even more amazing people who not only support me immensely, but also make me laugh on a regular basis and who make coming into work fun. These people have become very close friends over the years I've been in my job and I can't imagine making it everyday in my work without them.

When it comes to the art of blogging, I'm grateful to these people for helping me through some rough spots:
Well, I'm still so new at blogging, but I'd like to give a shout out to my girl Nini for encouraging me to finally get my blog up and running (something I'd always wanted to do but never had the courage to actually get it done).

I'm also grateful to my other friends IRL who have blogs and help encourage me: J, M, and R.

Third, I'm grateful for Lisa from archives who was the very first (non-IRL-friend) comment on my blog (hahaha, is that creepy?)! I was flabbergasted that anyone out there in blogger-land had even read my blog, and better yet, left a great comment to boot. That one comment really made me feel really legit as a blogger!

Finally, I'm grateful for everyone who has followed me on Friend Connect, commented on my posts with such encouraging remarks, or who has even just visited! I still find it amazing that anyone is interested in what I wear or what I have to say, but I'm so grateful for each and every one of you!

One blogging challenge I'm grateful happened because it made me stronger was...
Starting a blog! Getting over that hurdle of just sitting down and starting a blog was NOT easy. Before-hand, I focussed too much on worrying about what people would think or that my clothes and my stories weren't "good enough". But just starting and getting myself out there helped me SO much...it helped me realize that I don't actually give a crap what the nay-sayers might think...and that if I want to post my outfits, I will! And seeing others out there in the same boat as me, or those who enjoyed fashion blogs as much as I did really helped encourage me and get over the fear.

To my readers, I'd like to say...
THANK YOU! Blogging really is a community, and without each other, we'd never be here. I am so grateful for everyone's encouragement, sweet comments and support. I may not have the most popular blog, but that makes each and every reader that I do have all the more special.

Love love love!

FBFF - Friend Friday: Spring Trends

After a hiatus last week, I'm back to FBFF this week. And I'm super excited about the topic - Spring Trends!

What are the top 5 Spring trends that you are looking forward to seeing/sporting this season?

Not sure how much of these are on the Official Spring 2011 Trend Alert, but here are 5 things I'm loving this spring:

Leopard Print
I just love the little hints of leopard print that have popped up this year. I think adding just a hint of it adds some fierceness to what could be an otherwise drab outfit.

Wide Leg Jeans
After years of skinny jeans, it's refreshing to see some flare again. I love the look of huge jeans with an awesome pair of platforms underneath. Kendi and Krystal both rock this look.

Stripes
I know this isn't a trend new for 2011, and stripes have been around for a while, but I still see them everywhere and I still wear them allthetime. I don't know what it is about them, but I just love the classic French look.

Earth Tones
Colour blocking is huge this season, but it's not a trend I've been able to master myself. But thankfully spring 2011 seems to be a dual-colour-palette year and earth tones are also hugely popular.

Mulberry
I just love love love the Mulberry bags I've seen all over the place. Must. Find. Acceptable. Knockoff Inspired Piece.

FBFF - Friend Friday: Feminism

I am so very happy to announce that I've joined my very first online fashion blogging community! The lovely Katy from Modly Chic has put together an amazing group of bloggers...and I've been completely overwhelmed by the support I've received from everyone and I've already learned so much!

So what the heck is FBFF? Well, it's Fashion Blog Friend Friday of course! Every week Katy comes up with some great questions, and FFBF-ers answer them to let our readers know a little bit more about ourselves. I love the idea! I love the opportunity to share with you my thoughts on some great topics and I'm very excited to get to know a little bit more about my fellow FBFF-ers!

This week's FBFF is a topic I've always felt very strongly about - feminism!

1. Do you think there is an incompatibility between feminism and a love for fashion?
Absolutely not! To me, feminism has always meant being proud to be a woman and having the freedom to express my feminitity however I choose. If a woman chooses to shun fashion, then she can be a feminist. If a woman chooses to strut around in Jimmy Choo's everyday, then she can be a feminist too. I think too often people expect all feminists to be the bra-burning hippies of the 1960s. I admire these women - they paved the way for the freedoms and rights I enjoy as a woman today. But I think feminism is fluid and evergreen...it has evolved. And to me there is plenty of room in this day in age for feminism and a love for fashion to co-exist.

2. There is more to each of us than a love for fashion, how do you incorporate every aspect of yourself into your blog?
Well, my blog is still pretty new and I've only been doing it for a month or two, so I'm still trying to figure out ways to find myself within SC4TMQ. But I've found a few ways to do it. I am a music lover. While I love new music and a lot of Top 40 and hip hop, I was raised on "classic rock" and have a deep love for it. So when coming up with a blog name, I chose "Spring Clean for the May Queen" which is my favourite line from Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven (and is a play on my last name - May). Another way I've been incorporating aspects of myself is the photos of myself in front of my bookshelves. I *love* my books and so using my wall o' books was a perfect backdrop!

But material aspects aside, I think this blog is really reflecting the part of me that is wanting to not give a sh*t about what other people think, and doing what it is that I really want to do. I've been reading fashion blogs forever...but was always too scared or too worried about what people would think of me if I started one myself. But I decided to stop caring and just go out there and do it. There are still moments when I feel stupid or that my photos or outfits aren't "good enough" but I love this new hobby too much to let it get in my way!

3. With the fashion industry still being a male-dominated profession, how do you think it would differ if women played a larger role?
This is a hard question! And I'm not sure I really agree that fashion is still male-dominated. Sure the industry has been heavily influenced by icons like Karl Lagerfeld and Alexander McQueen, but I think even more iconic women turned the fashion industry into what it is today (Coco Chanel anyone?) and I still think women are very much in control. The focus on women in fashion can't be ignored...and neither can the vast amount of marketing aimed directly at women. Women influence every aspect of fashion, whether they are in the designer's seat or not.

4. How is your self-image and the way you carry yourself informed by your beliefs?
Physically, I have a terrible hunch in my back that developed as a teenager as a result of years of insecurity. It's often painful and I'm sure it'll only get worse as I get older. But it's a perfect reflection of how I used to carry myself - insecure, shy and unable to hold my head up and be proud of who I am.

I'd like to think now I carry myself and come across as a friendly, honest person who is proud of who she is. I've learned a lot from who I used to be, and it is now important to me to not only stand up for myself, but also to be aware of others around me and how they influence my life and vice versa. This has made me a much happier person - and I hope I come across as a happy person!

5. Do you think clothing/makeup/hair helps communicate the truth about yourself or are those things superfluous add-ons?
I admittedly find it hard to dress to communicate the truth of myself. I live in a small city with relatively little shopping variety and so dressing for myself and dressing according to current trends is often hard to differentiate. But I never wear something that makes me feel uncomfortable and that I don't feel is a true reflection of me. A lot of the outfits I post on my blog are work outfits - and that very much portrays who I am 9 to 5. But I'm also a gf, a friend, a sister, a daughter...and my clothes reflect these roles and personalities and change constantly as my comfort levels or my interests change.
Me and my besties Becky, Lucy, Livia and Jess

Those were tough questions, yo! But important questions...looking forward to your comments and what others wrote for FBFF this week!
